One of our favorite activities is painting. My son is learning to paint using a variety of methods, but he loves the Waldorf wet-on-wet painting style. In the painting depicted below he is painting yellow onto a wet canvas that had first been painted blue. He was quite excited to see that green appears when blue “meets” yellow. He’s done a variety of these color meeting paintings such as “red meets yellow.” Once he has mastered the basics, we will be using Painting in Waldorf Education for further painting ideas. In the interim, there are some great story painting ideas in our existing curricula. Story painting consists of the teacher reading a simple poem and having the children use nothing more than color to illustrate the poem. For instance, flowers dancing in a sunny field may be depicted as splotches of red on a green background with an amorphous yellow circle blob representing the sun.
